We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both.
---Justice Louis Brandeis
Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.
---Frederick Douglass
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

The Bronx Needs Senator Rivera
He Fights For The People
Gustavo Rivera has been a state senator for eleven years. During those years he fought for progressive causes and became a respected leader in the New York State Senate.

Because he is popular with the constituents he represents, he did not face a primary prior to redistricting. Now half of the folks he has been representing so well have been replaced by new voters who know little about him.
This made him vulnerable, and he has made enemies. There is the Bronx County Democratic machine. He is independent and they want good soldiers who always follow orders. And then there are the special interests. He fights for ordinary people in the New York State Senate and that can mean opposing the interests of giant corporations and the super rich.

You can learn more about him by going to his website:
Passing the New York Health Act would save lives, eliminate needless suffering and save a fortune in money for taxpayers and those who need healthcare. It would do this by slowly and carefully overhauling New York’s healthcare system so it would function like the Canadian or the French healthcare systems. This idea is popular with the public, but awareness that there is a bill which would make it happen is low. Special interests that put profits before patients have been able to keep it from getting a vote.

The chairs of the Health Committees in the New York State Senate and the Assembly have been strong advocates for the New York Health Act. Unfortunately, Assembly Member Gottfried, who is the chair of the Assembly Committee on Health, is retiring. Activists for passage of the bill view this as a real setback. The person who will replace him is not known. It could be someone indifferent to the bill or someone opposed to it.
Senator Rivera is the chair of the Senate Committee on Health. If he is not re-elected, the situation in the Senate will be the same as it is in the Assembly. Senator Rivera is committed to getting the New York Health Act passed, but we his may work to keep the bill up from getting a vote.
Assembly Member Richard Gottfried and State Senator Gustavo Rivera
The loss of both of the strongest champions for the New York Health Act in the New York State Legislature would be an unthinkable setback in the fight to get the bill passed.
The re-election of Senator Rivera is essential for progressive causes in general and the New York Health Act in particular.
We urge you to vote for him if you live in the newly drawn 33rd New York State Senate District.
Even if you do not live in the 33rd Senate District, we urge you to support him.
You can volunteer for him by emailing us at bronxnypan@gmail.com Include your name and phone number. We will connect you to his campaign.
Our weak election laws allow special interests to flood political campaigns with money as long as they do so without contributing directly to a candidate. We are already seeing that happen, so we are urge folks to go this web page where you can make a contribution to Senator Rivera’s campaign by:
